My concentrations are 12 pieces submitted for AP art which all have a similar theme and are composed of the same medium

My concentration focuses on outer space and objects that humans use to interact with the cosmos. I have am interested in astronomy and wanted my concentration pieces to connect my art and other interests. I achieved this by contrasting the beauty of outer space to human space-faring technology, using texture, repetition of patterns, and by breaking the picture plane. My work was influenced by art such as Russian cold war space propaganda, Leonardo da Vinci’s work, and music from David Bowie.

My first piece focused on the symmetry of a rocket taking off. I captured the motion of the objects in space in all my pieces, and how light reflects off the subject’s surroundings. I used pen and marker to create the background and then covered it in colored pencil to add details and enriched the colors in all my concentrations. I had an important turning point in my second and third pieces where I began to use the subject to break and expand off the traditional borders of the piece. From here I focused more on expanding my use of space in my work and add more contrast to my pieces (3+4). While I was focusing on the texture of my work throughout, I added line repetition and patterns more prominently in pieces to enhance the texture and add a greater sense of shape (5+6). In the next few pieces, I changed up my viewpoint to further push spatial perspective in order to make a more interesting background (9+10). In my final pieces, I added to my concept by envisioning as if a human was actually in space, not just the technology. For example, there is a person in the space suit and the final picture was from a human viewpoint, looking out of a window of a rocket (11+12). This added a more personal tone to the final pieces, while I still was able to depict human technology in space, break borders, and have textural line repetition.
